Non-verbal expressivity synthesis

چکیده
Appraisal theories in psychology investigate the emotion elicitation process though the cognitive appraisal of stimuli. They offer predictions regarding resulting facial expressions as well as action tendencies based on the way an event is appraised. We used these predictions to achieve nonverbal expressivity synthesis of Embodied Conversational Agents. Two approaches were adopted, a stand-alone approach with an expressive head, as well as a situated one, in a virtual environment that can cater dynamic interactions with human users.

AVAB-DBS: an Audio-Visual Affect Bursts Database for Synthesis
It has been shown that adding expressivity and emotional expressions to an agent’s communication systems would improve the interaction quality between this agent and a human user. In this paper we present a multimodal database of affect bursts, which are very short non-verbal expressions with facial, vocal, and gestural components that are highly synchronized and triggered by an identifiable ev...
متن کاملReal-time analysis and synthesis of emotional gesture expressivity
In this paper we focus on modeling a bi-directional communication between an embodied conversational agent and humans based on the non-verbal channel of the communication involving movement and gesture. We present a system that takes video data in input, extracts movement characteristics, and finally synthesizes the animation of a virtual agent. For each gesture performed by a human, the agent ...
متن کاملTraining in Compensatory Strategies Enhances Rapport in Interactions Involving People with Möbius Syndrome
In the exploratory study reported here, we tested the efficacy of an intervention designed to train teenagers with Möbius syndrome (MS) to increase the use of alternative communication strategies (e.g., gestures) to compensate for their lack of facial expressivity. Specifically, we expected the intervention to increase the level of rapport experienced in social interactions by our participants....

متن کاملGesture Expressivity Modulations in an ECA Application
In this paper, we propose a study of co-verbal gesture properties that could enhance the animation of an Embodied Conversational Agent and their communicative performances. This work is based on the analysis of gesture expressivity over time that we have study from a corpus of 2D animations. First results point out two types of modulations in gesture expressivity that are evaluated on their com...
